An antique Italian Grand Tour patinated bronze statue of flying Mercury with a torch after Giambologna, Flemish, 1529 to 1608. Mounted on a granite stand. The statue is adorned with a green patina. Circa: late 19th century. One of the most well known statues from the Renaissance era, this Mercury statue is a copy of a celebrated design by Giambologna created around 1564. Giambologna designed this statue as part of a fountain for the Medici in the Villa Medici in Rome. Mercury was a messenger and a god of trade, profit, and commerce. Giambologna was the last significant Italian Renaissance sculptor, with a large workshop producing large and small works in bronze and marble in a late Mannerist style.
