Watercolor on paper painting by Ellen Axson Wilson, 1860 to 1914, the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson. The artwork depicts a landscape view of Naples, Italy, with the town, ships, peasants and the Vesuvius in the background. Signed Mrs Wilson, dated 1880s, titled The Bay of Naples on the backside. Oval wooden frame. From 1875 to 1878 Ellen Axson Wilson studied art with Helen F. Fairchild at the Female College in Rome, Georgia. In 1878 she won a bronze medal for freehand drawing at the Paris International Exposition and launched a promising career as a professional artist. She later enrolled at the Art Students League in New York where she studied under leading American artists of the day. After her marriage to Woodrow Wilson, she continued to create art, mostly landscape paintings. Collectible Antique American Fine Art.
