David Burliuk, Russian, 1882 to 1967, hand painted Russian doll depicting a rural woman in a traditional costume holding a basket with paints and brushes. Made of various fabrics. Signed and dated 1954 on the feet. The similar Doll with Painted Face, ink and paint on fabric, was in the catalog, Futurism and After David Burliuk 1882 to 1967, page 55. David Davidovich Burliuk was a poet, artist, and publicist associated with the Futurist and Neo Primitivist movements. At the outbreak of World War I, the artist fled to Siberia and then Japan before relocating to New York in 1922. His works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, among others.
