A Russian bronze sculpture, Cossack Taras Bulba. Designed by Eugene Lanceray, Yevgeny Yevgenyevich Lansere, Russian, 1875 to 1946, after the original oil painting on canvas, Cossacks Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, 1880 to 1891, by Ilya Repin, Russian, 1844 to 1930. Taras Bulba is the most textbook character from a romanticized historical novella set in the first half of the 17th century, written by Nikolai Gogol, Russian, Ukrainian, 1809 to 1852. Mounted on a stand. Marked with an impressed stamp on the base. Eugene Lanceray was a Russian and Soviet painter, and book artist and associated stylistically with Mir iskusstva, the World of Art, an influential Russian art movement inspired by an artistic journal of the same name, founded in 1899, in Saint Petersburg. Other prominent members of Mir iskusstva included Lancerays uncle Alexandre Benois, Konstantin Somov, Walter Nouvel, Leon Bakst, and Dmitry Filosofov. Like other members of Mir iskusstva, he was fascinated with the sparkling dust of Rococo art and often turned to 18th century Russian history and art for inspiration.
