Lot 0033: ENGLISH STENCIL ON CARD BOARD WRONG WAR BY BANKSY

41 reviews

Banksy, English, born 1974, stencil on card board, Wrong War, 2003. Provenance: used by demonstrators against the war in Iraq in 2003 in London. An original paper label of Stop The War Coalition is on the backside. Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. Banksys work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack. Banksy created a number of different signs for the 2003 London protest against the Iraq War but few originals have survived because they were either discarded in the street or confiscated by the Metropolitan Police. Contemporary Political Stencil Posters, Street Art Decor, For Collectors.
