A large antique Japanese Meiji period pottery vase. The vases are hand painted with depictions of sakura trees and birds. The neck is adorned with a gilded ornament. Marked with Hieroglyphs on the bottom. Circa: the late 19th century. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province. Since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. Hieroglyphical hallmarks on the bottom of both pieces translate as Satsuma Nippon and refer to the earlier period of the Meiji era, 1868-1913.
