The icon is put into a riza or oklad, a silver cover protecting with gilding and chased decoration, the halos are garnished with polychrome enamel. Inscription Vladimirskaya Mother of God in Church Slavonic is in the lower part of the riza. Vladimirskaya icon is a 12th-century Byzantine icon, an early example of the Eleusa iconographic type and one of the most culturally significant pieces of art in Russian history.
