Heorhiy Narbut was a seminal figure in the renaissance of graphic and folk arts that occurred in Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century. He illustrated books of fairy tales and fables, he painted and drew silhouette portraits of his friends as well as landscapes and still lifes, and he made toys and designed furniture. After studying in St. Petersburg, he returned to Ukraine after the February 1917 revolution and contributed graphic designs to the currency, postage stamps, seals, and charters of the Ukrainian Peoples Republic.
