A 19th century oil on canvas portrait painting attributed to Gustav A. Spangenberg, German, 1828 to 1891. The painting depicts a portrait of a lady wearing a black dress with a white lace collar, possibly Betty Paoli, born Barbara Elisabeth Gluck, 1815 to 1894, an Austrian writer, a companion of Princess Maria Anna Schwarzenberg, 1767 to 1848, and friend of Maria von Ebner-Eschenbach. Paoli was a poet, journalist, translator, and art and theater critic. The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1859 lower right. Housed in an antique wooden frame. Cleaned and Relined, please refer to the paper label on the backside. Gustav A Spangenberg was a German painter in the 19th century. He initially trained at Herrmann Kauffmann, 1808 to 1889, in Hamburg.
