John Gould, English, 1804 to 1881), hand colored lithograph on paper, Thalurania Refulgens, from A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming birds. Circa: 1850s to 1960s. Titled in the plate lower to the center. Marked in the plate, J. Gould and H.C. Richter, lower left. Marked in the plate, Hullmandel and Walten, lower right. Framed. John Gould was an English ornithologist and bird artist, known for Ornithology illustration hummingbirds. The Gould League in Australia was named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed Darwins finches played a role in the inception of Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection. Goulds work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species. One of a kind artwork.
