Lot 0227: TWO JAPANESE SATSUMA POTTERY BOWLS AND A BROOCH

41 reviews

A lot of antique Japanese Satsuma pottery pieces with rich ornamental gilding and hand-painted design. A total of three items, two bowls and a brooch with silver setting. The first bowl is decorated with a depiction of the Japanese holy men, or Arhat, with a white dragon. The second bowl is decorated with a traditional rural landscape. The brooch represents a mountain and blue flowers. The bowls have hieroglyphical hallmarks on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province. Since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. The pieces in this lot date back to the late Meiji era, 1868-1913.
