A color lithograph in dark tones depicting a Japanese woman in a forest. Section IV, Plate IX from The Art of Chromolithography : Popularly Explained and Illustrated by Forty-Four Plates Showing Separate Impressions of All the Stones Employed. Published in 1883 by Sampson Low and Co., Imp. Lemercier & Cie., as indicated underneath Design by G.A. Audsley, signed in the lower left. Print by Gaulard, signed in the lower right. George Ashdown Audsley, 1838-1925, was an American architect and designer. Audsley and his brother authored lavishly illustrated books on ornament and Japanese art, as well as personally illuminated versions of great literature. Emile Gaulard, 1842-1924, was a French sculptor and printmaker. Oriental Graphic Art For Collectors.
