An antique 19th century color lithograph Roosters On A Cart In The Snow by the Japanese artist Watanabe Seitei, 1851 to 1918. Printed on a smooth wove paper. Printed by Gast Lith. Co., New York. Published by George Barrie, Philadelphia, 1894. Watanabe Seitei was a Nihonga painter and one of the first to visit Europe, attending the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris and being awarded a medal. Seitei blended Western realism with the delicate colors and washes of the Kikuchi Yosai school, introducing a new approach to kacho or bird-and-flower painting. George Barrie, from 1893 to 1895 was the Philadelphia printer and publisher, and worked upon a large and lavish series of original etchings and chromolithographs detailing exhibits of the fine art from participating countries at the Worlds Columbian Exposition. Barrie hired some of the finest etchers of the time, the majority being either French or American, to work on the series.
