An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon. The icon depicts Virgin Mary with Christ Child in the Panagia Portaitissa iconography. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is put into a riza or oklad, a silver cover protecting with embossed hallmarks 1863 and initials AS, VS in Cyrillic referring to the silversmith Vasily Semenov who operated a workshop in Moscow during the late 19th century. Our Lady of Iviron, also known as Iverskaya in Russian, is an Eastern Orthodox icon of the Virgin Mary in the Georgian Iviron monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, where it is believed to have been since the year 999.
