Lot 0083: RUSSIAN PAINTING ON PAPER BY ISSACHAR BER RYBACK

41 reviews

A gouache on paper painting depicting a village scene with two grazing horses by Issachar Ber Ryback, Jewish, Ukrainian, French, 1897 to 1935. Stamped lower right. Housed in a black and gold wooden frame. One of a kind artwork. Issachar Ber Ryback was a painter, graphic artist, and sculptor; active in the Jewish art renaissance in Russia. Yisakhar Ber Rybak was born in Elisavetgrad, Ukraine. Studied at the Art Academy of Kiev from 1911 to 1916. In the summers of 1915 and 1916, he accompanied El Lissitzky on expeditions for the Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Society, copying tombstones in Orsha and culling folk-inspired prints, ceremonial silver objects, and synagogue wood carvings in Podolia and Volhynia. Combining the motifs of Jewish folk art with the traditions of European modernism (first Cubism, later Expressionism), he depicted the scenes of Jewish life, in which he uniquely and subtly conveyed the worldview of the Jews of Eastern Europe and the poetics of their daily life. Paintings, graphic works are influenced by vivid colors, spontaneous manners, and pronounced Judaism mysticism. Created ceramics, set design for performances at the Ukrainian Jewish Theater in Kharkov, designed books, and wrote articles for art criticism. Modernist Fine Art For Collectors.
