From 1952 to 1954 Avetisyan studied at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture named after I.E. Repin, where one of his main teachers was Boris Ioganson, 1893-1973, who was one of the high-ranking Soviet Realist painters.
