Lot 0029: TWO FRENCH ETCHINGS BY MAURICE ACHENER

41 reviews

Maurice Achener, French, 1881 to 1963, two etching prints. Both signed and titled in pencil and framed. One has a paper label at the back with the lettering Villa Lord Byron: Le Balcon a la Colombe. Circa the first half of the 20th century. Maurice Achener was a draftsman, book illustrator, tapestry designer, and muralist, but his primary work was as a printmaker. His work was mainly landscapes, created based on real life, as well as on numerous designs and paintings which he then used for his etchings. He eventually began working directly on the slab. Each engraving went through many stages. He would carefully research which paper would work best for his prints. He created his own inks. He was a precise and thorough printmaker, but his work was poetic and, although it is considered to be in the classical tradition, deeply personal. French Print Art Collectibles.
