An antique Chinese Han Dynasty pottery earthenware with polychrome painted decoration cocoon vase or jar. The barrel shaped form of the vessel represents the cocoon of a silkworm, referencing the importance of the silk industry to the Han Dynasty economy. The vessel is decorated with a repeating cloud scroll or yunwen pattern in orange and white shades with much original pigment remaining, evoking the celestial realm and the Taoist immortal paradise. The vessel rests on a raised foot ring and its narrow neck suggests it was meant to hold liquids, perhaps wine. Han Dynasty, circa 221 BC to 220 AD.
