A piece of bloodstone, or heliotrope, a cryptocrystalline mixture of quartz with red inclusions of hematite that resemble spots of blood. The name heliotrope derives from various ancient notions about the manner in which the mineral reflects light. Heliotrope was called Stone of Babylon by Albertus Magnus.
