A watercolor and gouache on thick paper theater costume design for Alexei Ryabov's operetta Sorochinsky Fair, attributed to Nisson Shifrin, Russian, Soviet, 1892 to 1942. Signed and titled in the Cyrillic upper left. Housed in a thin metal frame. Nisson Abramovich Shifrin was a Soviet theater artist and teacher. People's Artist of the RSFSR, 1958. Winner of two Stalin Prizes, 1949, 1951. In 1918-1919 he studied at the studio of A. A. Exter, one of the leaders of the Russian avant-garde art; in 1920-1921 - at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts in Kyiv. In 1918 he was one of the organizers of the art section of the Kiev Kultur-League, which aimed to create modern Jewish national art.
