41 reviews

An antique Russian Orthodox four-part icon dated from the mid 19th century. Wood, gesso, egg tempera. The tradition of creating icons consisting of four parts located around the Crucifixion dates back to antiquity. For the first time, icons of this type are found in Novgorod in the 15th century. The four-part icon, which depicts various revered icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, is in itself a small iconostasis dedicated to the glorification of the Mother of God. In the center of the composition is the Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. God the Father is symbolically depicted above the crucifixion of the Son of God. In the sufferings of Christ, the Mother of God and John the Baptist accompany. Russian Orthodox Icons, Antiques And Collectibles.
