Lot 0314: FRENCH LIMOGES LANTERNIER AND CO PORCELAIN PLATE

41 reviews

A vintage French A. Lanternier and Co Limoges porcelain plate. The plate is decorated with Art Deco style dove and gilded borders and rims. Marked with manufacturer stamps on the bottom. Limoges porcelain is hard paste porcelain produced by factories in and around the city of Limoges, France beginning in the late 18th century, but does not refer to a particular manufacturer. By about 1830 Limoges, which was close to the areas where suitable clay was found, had replaced Paris as the main center for private porcelain factories, although the state-owned Sèvres porcelain near Paris remained dominant at the very top of the market. Limoges has maintained this position to the present day. Francois Frederic Lanternier established a luxury porcelain workshop in 1857. Partnering with Breuil he took over the Chabrol factory and started producing porcelain, which was artistically hand decorated in his studio. In 1890 the company was joined by Frederic's son, Alfred Lanternier. Alfred gained experience working in England as a Wedgewood representative. The company changed its name to A. Lanternier and Co. They bought another porcelain factory in Limoges. Antique and Vintage Porcelain Table Ware, Cabinet Plates and Collectibles.
