Lot 0056: ANTIQUE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ROMAN PEOPLE AND MONUMENTS

41 reviews

A set of seven antique photographs. Two hand painted Carte de Visite cabinet portraits of an Italian woman and man, probably a shoemaker. Five silver gelatin printed landscape pictures with the views of Rome depicting ancient architecture like the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Arch of Titus, the Mausoleum of Hadrian, known as Castel Sant'Angelo, and the Arch of Constantine. One shows the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli. All from the 1870s. Authentic Historical Documents. From the late 1850s through the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes circulated en masse and spurred a veritable “cartomania”. Works from this and similar studios are part of the collection of the MET Museum in New York. Highly collectible items. Cabinet of Oddities and Rarities.
