A set of ten vintage cartes de visite depicting males of different professions and social levels. One of the portraits is Robert Lowe, Viscount Sherbrooke, a very notable British and Australian politician. One of the standing portraits seems to be an American Civil War period soldier in full uniform. Photographs made by several studios from London, New York, Montreal, Wurzburg a.o. Some stamped on verso and signed. Circa 1860s to 1900s. From the late 1850s through the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes circulated en masse and spurred a veritable “cartomania”. Works from this and similar studios are part of the collection of the MET Museum in New York. Highly collectible items. Cabinet of Oddities and Rarities.
