An antique Russian Orthodox Plaschanitsa icon of Christ. The heavy backed velvet field richly embroidered with bullion thread, at the center, on the stone of anointing, a painted likeness of the reposed body of the crucified Christ. The borders heavily embroidered with vines interspersed with Seraphim and Cherubim. The plaschanitsa or epitaphios (Greek) is used on the last two days of the holy week in orthodoxy as part of the ceremonies marking the death and resurrection of Christ. Circa: 1900s.
