An old hand-carved wooden mask from the Liberia/Ivory Coast. The mask, with its prominent forehead and nose, narrow eye slits, oval chin protrusions and a heavily curved beard, represents the spirit of Ge. This mask serves as a visible symbol of strength, principles to maintain public order, initiate young people and punish offenders. They are used by a male secret society called Poro, a forceful local authority.
