Lot 591 - ISLAMIC OTTOMAN EMBROIDERED CALLIGRAPHIC TEXTILE PANEL

An Ottoman sitara, decorative cover or hanging, adorned with traditional calligraphy and metal thread embroidered panel. Such luxurious textiles were produced in the court workshops of the Ottoman Empire and were intended for the great Islamic holy sites: either as part of the Kiswa, the covering of the Kaaba in Mecca or to adorn the Al Masjid an Nabawi and the Prophets Tomb in Medina. The tughra the personal calligraphic emblem of the reigning Ottoman sultan. Inscriptions in the Thuluth script are embroidered onto the central red shield and the crescent moon. The primary texts found on such hangings traditionally include the Shahada or salutations to the Prophet. The piece is framed by an intricate Ottoman pattern of interlacing golden branches, ears of grain, and flowers, symbolizing the gardens of Paradise and prosperity.
