A cylindrical sculpture by American artist Mel Hantz is executed in sand cast iron, featuring a rich, textured surface with a naturalistic oxidized finish. The exterior is adorned with various relief motifs, including a butterfly, gear like circular forms, and vertical linear patterns, supplemented by a series of knotted iron loops applied to one side. The vessel like form tapers slightly at the base, where the artists surname, Hantz, incised. This work exemplifies the Brutalist influence and industrial material exploration characteristic of Hantzs oeuvre. Mel Hantz, also known as Sculptor Hantz, is an American contemporary sand casting sculptor, author, and educator based in New York City and Jacksonville, Florida. He is best known for his intricate, heavy metal knot sculptures cast from recyclable raw materials like bronze, iron, copper, and aluminum.
