Lot 0050: AFTER CLAUDE LORRAIN BEAUTIES OF CLAUDE ETCHING 1825

Seller: F1AD7 (352)

After Claude Lorrain, French, 1600 to 1682, etching and mezzotint on paper. From the Beauties of Claude series, plate 18. After Liber Veritatis, plate 164, Coastal Landscape with Apollo and the Cumaean Sibyl. Published by W.B. Cooke, 9, Soho Square, London. Engraved by G.H. Every. Dated 1825. Claude Lorrain, born Claude Gellee, was a painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era originally from the Duchy of Lorraine. He spent most of his life in Italy, and is one of the earliest significant artists, aside from his contemporaries in Dutch Golden Age painting, to concentrate on landscape painting. His landscapes often transitioned into the more prestigious genre of history paintings by addition of a few small figures, typically representing a scene from the Bible or classical mythology. The Liber Veritatis, meaning Book of Truth in Latin, is a book of drawings recording his completed paintings made by Claude Lorrain. Collectible Graphic Art, Prints And Multiples, Landscape, Classic European Art.
