A fine Mughal carved nephrite jade dagger hilt (khanjar), India, 18th/19th century. The pommel is expertly carved in the form of a horse's head with an incised mane and gold-inlaid bridle, the muzzle set with red stone nostrils. The curved grip and flared base are elegantly decorated in the traditional kundan technique with gold wire and inset red and green gemstones (likely rubies/spinels and emeralds) forming stylized floral sprays. The underside retains the rusted iron tang of its original forged blade.
