Lot 0007: LITHOGRAPH AND LITHOGRAPH BROCHURE BY MIHAIL CHEMIAKIN

Seller: A6F53 (59)

A lot of two vintage Russian items, a lithograph and offset lithograph brochure by Mihail Chemiakin, Russian, born 1943. The lithograph depicts a monochrome surrealist composition with two human-like figures. Signed and dated 1974 lower left. The brochure contains an invitation to Mikhail Shchemyakins exhibition in Paris: Galerie Dina Verny, 1971. Mihail Mikhailovich Chemiakin or Shemyakin is a Russian painter, stage designer, sculptor, and publisher, and a controversial representative of the nonconformist art tradition of St. Petersburg. Provenance: Gifted directly by the artist to Suzanne Massie, 1931 to 2025, the American scholar and noted interpreter of Russian culture, whose close relationships with artists, institutions, and intellectuals in both the United States and Russia were fostered through decades of cultural exchange, including close friendships with Mihail Chemiakin and Dmitri Shagin. An informal advisor to Ronald Reagan during the final years of the Cold War, specifically on topics relating to Russia, and in dialogue with figures including Mikhail Gorbachev, Massie played a significant role in advancing mutual understanding between the two nations; works gifted to her reflect this unique network of artistic and diplomatic connections. Russian Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
