An African Baule tribe hand carved wood monkey statue, also known as a Gbekre or Mbotumbo, from the Ivory Coast used for divination, spiritual protection, and honoring nature spirits. These figures are distinctive for their blend of human and animal characteristics and are used as powerful intermediaries in spiritual rituals. The figure stands upright on a thick, circular wooden base, typical of standing monkey statues that serve as guardians or spirits. It has a prominent, boxy muzzle and a forward-projecting snout, characteristic of a baboon or monkey. The figure holds a small, deep bowl or cup in both hands against its chest.
