An antique engraving on paper depicts John of Gaunt, 1340 to 1399, 1st Duke of Lancaster and the fourth son of King Edward III of England. It was created by the renowned English engraver and antiquary George Vertue. This print was originally produced for the Heads of the Kings of England, a series of illustrations meant to accompany Nicholas Tindals English translation of Paul de Rapins History of England. Inscribed lower. George Vertue, 1684 to 1756 was an English engraver and antiquary, whose notebooks on British art of the first half of the 18th century are a valuable source for the period.
