Nikolai Troshin, Russian, 1897 to 1990, a mixed media painting on paper depicting the cover design for the Soviet-era childrens book Hans from the Toy Valley, published in Moscow circa 1930 by the Posrednik publishing house. The book was written by Margaret Morley and translated by M. Gorbunova-Posadova. The composition shows a young boy seated beside a donkey, holding a small toy animal, an image reflecting the story known in English as Donkey John of the Toy Valley.
