A West African Ghana Ashanti Fertility metal sculpture. The sculpture depicts a family of three people - two adult figures and a child between them, standing on a common base. The Asante, also known as Ashanti in English, are part of the Akan ethnic group and are native to the Ashanti Region of modern-day Ghana. Asantes are the last group to emerge out of the various Akan civilisations. Twi is spoken by over nine million Asante people as their native language. Ashanti dolls are one of the most famous traditional African figurines. Ashanti dolls are kept by women so that beautiful and healthy children are born. A round face and a high forehead are the ideals of beauty in the Ashanti tribe, however, round faces are characteristic of them. Note: used by a woman who wanted to have children.
