Lot 0105: PAINTING ATTR TO PABLO PICASSO WITH FORENSIC REPORT

Seller: 51FE6 (360)

Attributed to Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) Bust of a Woman, 1929 Oil on canvas Signed and dated “Picasso 1929.” This Cubist portrait depicts the bust of a woman rendered through fragmented planes and geometric forms characteristic of Picasso’s work of the late 1920s. The composition reflects the artist’s return to figuration during this period, combining structural rigor with expressive abstraction. The painting is accompanied by scientific and chemical analysis reports conducted by Thomas J. Tague Jr., Ph.D., The Bruker Corporation, Massachusetts, supporting the historical consistency of the pigments, materials, signature, and age of the work with the period. The report is available upon request. Tom has been involved directly and indirectly in the scientific analysis of art objects for more than 20 years and has more than 100 publications and 5 patents. He has engaged in successful collaborations with colleagues at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in NYC and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which have resulted in the development of new instrumentation and methods designed specifically to analyze art objects. These collaborations have been ongoing for more than a decade. In December 2018, the MET and Bruker entered a 10-year partnership to introduce new scientific instrumentation to the field of Cultural Heritage. A product of this collaboration was the development of the Bravo Raman portable spectrometer, utilized for the analysis of historically important objects shown in the manuscript by Pozzi, Basso, Rizzo, Cesaratto, and Tague, “Evaluation and optimization of the potential of a handheld Raman spectrometer: in-situ, non-invasive materials characterization in artworks”, J. Raman Spec, 2019.
