John Edward Costigan, American, 1888 to 1972, etching on paper. Multi-figure genre scene, farmers life. Signed in plate in the lower left and in pencil in the lower right. Signed in pencil in the lower left, Work in the Filed. Undated, ca. 1930s to 1940s. Matted and framed. Associated American Artists label on the backside. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, John E. Costigan was mainly self-taught. He is known for his strong brush stroke and an interest in the common person as a subject. He portrays his people as deeply rooted in the soil that they work, humble yet dignified and contented. His most famous mediums are oil and watercolor painting as well as etchings and lithographs.
