Kalyna belongs to the mature period of Nina Volkovas artistic career — a Ukrainian Soviet painter and alumna of the Kyiv Art Institute. The image of viburnum shrubs, rendered with bold, expressive brushwork, conveys the vitality of nature and the decorative power of this traditional Ukrainian symbol. The composition integrates both decorative and realist elements — characteristic of Volkovas style, particularly in her still lifes and landscapes. Kalyna (viburnum) holds deep cultural resonance in Ukrainian symbolism, traditionally associated with memory, homeland, and national identity — thereby enriching the paintings cultural significance.
