A bisque porcelain porcelain sculpture by Mintons, a major Staffordshire pottery company that operated until 1968. The piece depicts a seated female figure. A reduced model of a life-size marble figure made in 1838 by John Bell for Lord Lansdowne. Titled Dorothea, referring to a character from Don Quixote by Cervantes. Designed 1847, made 1865. Hallmarked on the bottom. John Bell, 1811 to 1895, was an English sculptor who participated in the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was responsible for the marble group representing America on the Albert Memorial in London. Parian ware is a type of bisque porcelain imitating marble which was developed around 1845 by Mintons, and named after Paros, the Greek island renowned for its fine-textured, white Parian marble.
