Lot 0286: AFRICAN GUINEA HANDCRAFTED CARVED WOOD MASKS

Seller: B1F27 (74)

A lot of two African handcrafted carved wood masks. The first item is a landai mask created by the Toma people of Guinea. The second mask depicts a beautifully detailed, realistic male face wearing a chieftains headdress. Toma masks, particularly the landai version, are board masks used by the Toma people of Guinea, specifically in the rituals of the Poro society. These masks, often associated with forest spirits, play a central role in the initiation rites of young males, symbolically representing the transition into adulthood.
