Lot 0047: FEMALE NUDE PAINTING ATTR. TO HERMANN KNACKFUSS

Hermann Knackfuss, German, 1848 to 1915, oil on canvas laid on cardboard painting depicting a motion study of a young nude woman. Housed in a gilt wooden frame. Features a newspaper page in German on the back: Er malte die Frau Holle im alten Rathaus translated as: He painted Frau Holle in the old town hall. Hermann Knackfuss was a German art writer, painter, illustrator and academy teacher. From 1869 to 1874 he studied at the Dusseldorf Art Academy with Eduard von Gebhardt, Julius Roeting and Eduard Bendemann. In 1870 Hermann volunteered in the Franco-German War. There was a publishing by him in the journal Gartenlaube from 1870. From 1875 to 78 he stayed in Rome. In 1880 he was appointed to the Kassel Academy. He created the frescoes in the entrance hall of the Strasbourg train station in 1898 with Kaiser Wilhelm II. He later took a trip to Palestine. He was also an author of artist monographs.
