In 1920, the most promising three year old horse in the United States did not run in the Kentucky Derby. Later in May, that horse Man o War won the Preakness Stakes. In June, the Belmont Stakes became a match race. All the other horses, except for Donnaconna, dropped out. Man o War won by 20 lengths in world record time. Phar Lap was a champion New Zealand bred Thoroughbred racehorse who is widely regarded as New Zealands greatest racehorse ever. Achieving incredible success during his distinguished career, his initial underdog status gave people hope during the early years of the Great Depression. He won the Melbourne Cup, two Cox Plates, the Australian Derby, and 19 other weight for age races. Clarence William Anderson is known professionally as C.W. Anderson, was an author and illustrator of children's books. Anderson had an interest in horses and drawing. When he wasn't out riding horses, he was drawing them, taking great interest in their bone structure and conformation. Anderson started his career by illustrating for other authors, but eventually began developing texts to accompany his realistic and lively black and white drawings.
