An antique Chinese, Western Jin period (266–420), Hunping funerary vessel or Soul Jar made of glazed stoneware. The smooth oval body is decorated with low-relief designs on the surface, juxtaposed with a complex sculptural assemblage depicting figures, birds, and animals surrounding one central and four side jar openings. The ritual function of such jars is to communicate between the living and the dead, it is intended to be a portal through which the soul will enter the realm of immortality, and also return to the grave. Perhaps the pavilion is a gate through which the soul entered heaven.
