Albrecht Durer, German, 1471 to 1528, engraving of Saint Eustace, circa 1501. Durers largest engraving depicts the moment of conversion of a Roman general named Placidus. While hunting, Placidus saw a crucifix miraculously appearing between a stags antlers. The stag spoke in Christs voice, and Placidus fell from his horse and became a Christian baptized with the name Eustace. Signed lower center AD for the artists monogram. Features watermarks and handwritten markings on the backside. Matted. Information mounted to the back is mistaken. Antique German Prints And Renaissance Art Collectibles.
