A pair of antique European 18th century hand carved wood panels with allegorical images of season. One panel titled Aestas, or Summertime, depicts a female sitting on a ground in a landscape and holding a bunch of wheat and sickle. The other panel is titled Autumnus, or Autumn, and shows a female sitting on a barrel and holding a goblet and a bunch of grapes. It is possible that the panels are a reference to the literary poem John Lydgate of Bury was an English monk and poet, born in Lidgate, near Haverhill, Suffolk, England. Off this forseyd / take the morallite, / Settith a syde / alle materys spooke in veyn: / The foure sesouns / shewe in ther degre, / First veer and Estas / next Autumpne with his greyn, / Constreynt of wyntir / with frostys ovir leyn, / To our foure Ages / the sesouns wel applied; / deth al consumyth / which may nat be denied. The panels most probably comes from the wall paneling of a library located on an English Manor House. Both panels are beautifully crafted and show great details.
