An antique hand-colored etching, a caricature titled Democracy, or A Sketch of the Life of Buonaparte underneath. A sequence of eight images arranged in two rows, a satirical retelling of the path of Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821, to the imperial French throne. Signed Js Gillray, invt & fect in the lower left. Published May 12th, 1800, by H. Humphrey, No. 27, St James's Street London, as indicated in the lower right. James Gillray, 1756-1815, was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his political and social satires. During the French Revolution, Gillray took a conservative stance and ridiculed the French, which greatly annoyed Napoleon, who wanted Gillray's caricatures suppressed by the British government. Hannah Humphrey, 1745–1818, was a leading London print seller of the 18th century. Black frame. Antique Historical Collectables, European Caricature Art.

Overall good condition. Signs of age and wear. Yellowing at edges, some dark stains on surface. Refer to photos. Sold as is.
